Temper tantrums in the supermarket. Tears that seem to come out of nowhere. Battles over homework that are more like wars. When your child has problems regulating his or her emotions, there's no hiding it. Children with intense emotions go from 0 to 100 in seconds and are prone to frequent emotional and behavioral outbursts that leave parents feeling bewildered and helpless.
Other parents may have told you that it's just a phase or that your child needs discipline. In reality, your child may have emotion dysregulation, a tendency to react intensely to situations other children take in stride. Parenting a Child Who Has Intense Emotions is an effective guide to de-escalating your child's emotions and helping your child express feelings in productive ways. You'll learn strategies drawn from dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), including mindfulness and validation skills, and practice them when your child's emotions spin out of control. This well-researched method for managing emotions can help your child make dramatic emotional and behavioral changes that both of you will be proud of.

Great resource for parents
My daughter exhibits traits of borderline personality disorder and so I have been trying to help her with DBT techniques and the change in her has been nothing sort of a miracle. The happy, joyous child I hoped she could be has come out.
great parenting resource
When I first read this book, I knew it would be helpful. I ordered 20 books or so and started helping parents go regulate themselves and help their children to regulate. Dialectical behavioral approaches are useful for all people, not just specific disorders. That’s why I love this book!
Read this book before you seek a medical solution to o had to handle kids.
As the grandparent of an overly emotional, often violent child, and as a person who was himself highly emotional though not violent, I found this book to be a significant bridge in my understanding and ability to help my grandson through what is clearly going to be his burden in life.
Great read for parenting a child with higher emotions than others
Not even all the way through this book – mainly because I am using what I am learning to help me relate and empower my son (13 years). My husband is also reading this and finding it very helpful with raising our son. Highly recommend!
Great book for anyone who has a child with intense …
Great book for anyone who has a child with intense emotions in their life. Parent, grandparent or child care provider. Very informative book.
Comprehensive and Informative
I bought this book for both professional and personal reasons. It covered all areas including understanding these children, parent’s feelings, caring for siblings, dealing with extended family, and so on. Whether or not one follows the techniques suggested, the support and validation offered can be helpful. However, I believe using the methods described would be likely to bring about improvement in the family dynamics.
How to parent better
From what I read so far I have really enjoyed it. Have not finished it yet but what I have read has helped me have more sense of control over what is happening when my child does become intense. In my opinion, It helps one analyze the situation before responding.
I found this book to be a great resource and I will continue to refer back to it. I would recommend it to anyone whose child can be difficult/exasperating at times, especially if you’ve already tried everything else and are feeling at the end of your rope.
I found this book an excellent resource for my own clinical practice and have already begun recommending it to those who parent children with intense emotions. It is easy to read and has some great strategies for managing children with emotional difficulties. I would highly recommend it to both parents and professionals working with children!
Parenting kids with strong emotions
This book is fairly good and has some very interesting points. It has honestly helped in ways. The only negative review is that I think the book is extremely repetitive.
