Temper tantrums in the supermarket. Tears that seem to come out of nowhere. Battles over homework that are more like wars. When your child has problems regulating his or her emotions, there's no hiding it. Children with intense emotions go from 0 to 100 in seconds and are prone to frequent emotional and behavioral outbursts that leave parents feeling bewildered and helpless.

Other parents may have told you that it's just a phase or that your child needs discipline. In reality, your child may have emotion dysregulation, a tendency to react intensely to situations other children take in stride. Parenting a Child Who Has Intense Emotions is an effective guide to de-escalating your child's emotions and helping your child express feelings in productive ways. You'll learn strategies drawn from dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), including mindfulness and validation skills, and practice them when your child's emotions spin out of control. This well-researched method for managing emotions can help your child make dramatic emotional and behavioral changes that both of you will be proud of.

When I first read this book, I knew it would be helpful. I ordered 20 books or so and started helping parents go regulate themselves and help their children to regulate. Dialectical behavioral approaches are useful for all people, not just specific disorders. That’s why I love this book!

Read this book before you seek a medical solution to o had to handle kids.

As the grandparent of an overly emotional, often violent child, and as a person who was himself highly emotional though not violent, I found this book to be a significant bridge in my understanding and ability to help my grandson through what is clearly going to be his burden in life.

Not even all the way through this book – mainly because I am using what I am learning to help me relate and empower my son (13 years). My husband is also reading this and finding it very helpful with raising our son. Highly recommend!

I found this book to be a great resource and I will continue to refer back to it. I would recommend it to anyone whose child can be difficult/exasperating at times, especially if you’ve already tried everything else and are feeling at the end of your rope.

I’m a therapist, and it doesn’t have activities and handouts, but does convey a fundamental understanding of how children regulate their emotions, and how parents can support healthy emotional regulation.

Well done!

This book is easy to read and has many practical tips for parents with kids with big emotions, as the title states. As a therapist, while I see the child in my room, I share this book with the parents. In the short while, they are able to pick up some simple clues for reacting differently to their child.
