The Spirituality of the Parent-Child Relationship – A How-to Book

 on May 17, 2015
By Dennis Coates
My preference is to think of spirituality as being grounded in this world and this life, not in the concept of a world and life beyond the here and now. And it has three dimensions: the spirituality of self, the spirituality of relationships, and the spirituality of my relationship to the planet and the cosmos. Eckhart Tolle’s books (The Power of Now & A New Earth) are my favorite source of enlightenment about the spirituality of the self.

Mine for the Gold

This book has some gold nuggets in it. The advice is sound and applicable. The beginning chapters are quite strong and strengthening. I did feel that the author waxed poetically about her wonderful parenting of her wonderful son a bit much. Particularly as the book goes on the good advice is weakened because of the author’s self-praising and parental bragging. I’m so glad she feels good about her parenting choices, but it begins to feel as though she’s pressing her values rather than just letting the sound advice be versatile and applicable to families as their personal values direct. Mining for the gold in the book is worth it, though. Her vision for parenting is what many parents are striving for these days.

A great read

This is one of 3 books I use with my journal so that I can reflect on what was read. All our children want is for us to be fully present when we spend time with them. That’s not always easy and this book gives great strategies. I am very happy with my purchase.

Great book rich with good advice

Great book rich with good advice. I’m a grandmother and my daughter recommended this book as it has helped her deal with motherhood. Some of the techniques have helped her immensely, and now I can apply them as well. Made a huge difference on providing coping mechanisms for children and getting them to relax to go to sleep at night. I highly recommend this book.

Really engaging, insightful book!

I am only halfway through reading this book, and I love it! It is really easy to read, flowing very nicely, and chock full of good advice about self-care, the way we interact with ourselves, and the way we interact with our children. I’ve barely started doing some of the exercises, and have found them already to be extremely meaningful and helpful. Thank you Susan Stiffelman!

In a perfect world, this book would be a text for all high school students. Then it would be taught differently in college. If your preference is to raise a happy, strong, confident, enlightened child, get ahold of this book. Every couple would benefit from having a copy in their home.

Another lovely – and important – book from Susan Stiffelman

I had the pleasure of meeting Susan at a conference and also hear Eckhart Tolle offer a presentation. This book is a lovely expression of their combined work and presence applied to parenting. The result, passing on the greatest gift from generation to generation. Starting right now. Not only does it provide guidance on both the “doing” and “being” of parenting, but it aims at the reader at their core, benefiting every aspect of themselves and their own lives and endeavors.

Typical Susan Stiffelman wisdom, as always. Another Stiffelman offering that every parent should own and actually read.

This is one of those books I will reread again when I get off track. Puts me back into perspective when being a parent is driving me crazy.
