Every parent needs this book!
I took a STEP class when I was pregnant with my son 30 years ago and loved it. My granddaughter is a toddler and I found myself wishing I had saved my STEP book from long ago. I was surprised and thrilled when I found that their are newer versions of this book available. I purchased one for myself. After I received it I realized I had to share this book with other parents. So I bought 3 more as gifts. This book is wonderful! If you’re a first time parent it’s a must have. This would make a wonderful baby shower gift. I will probably buy a few more books to give as gifts. Every parent should have this book!
Excellent Approach to Understanding and Managing Young Children
This STEP Handbook, part of the STEP program (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting,) is an excellent, clear, easy to follow approach to understanding the developmental needs of young children. It gives specific approaches and ways to respond to the various behaviors of children, differentiating between normal behaviors that might seem like misbehavior, yet giving parents ways to respond to irritating or upsetting behaviors in calm, respectful but clear ways themselves. It explains the difference between punishment and authoritative, clear responses….and gives many examples of how to communicate with young children and set clear limits and choices to maintain a calm, respectful home atmosphere. I think it’s an invaluable source of information for all parents of young children.
Unique look on parenting young children
Okay so this book seems very old fashion because it was written a while ago. However, it offers unique and simple ways to look at parenting differently.
Best book for young children
The concepts in this book are the ones that I have seen work across the board. The truth is, children do what they do for reasons that are important to them. It isn’t about understanding every little thing, but it is about finding out what children need and rewarding positive behaviors in order to continue to create win-win situations. Highly recommended.
i give this to parents of my patients
When we start having children we have no real idea of what to do – how to rear children.
Our pediatrician recommended this book and it proved to be a useful tool!
Bought it for some friends to use with their three-year-old son. I use to run workshops for parents using the STEP process,
This is an excellent book for parents of very young children
This is an excellent book for parents of very young children! Would definitely recommend to soon-to-be parents as well as those with children. I have three kids younger than 4 and this book helped put things into perspective again! It’s only 7 chapters and vey easy to read.
Solid parenting advice
I received this book as part of a parenting class. While a great deal of the book is covering very obvious items (are your kids hungry? Are they tired) it does contain a great deal of good insight. Items like the mental development of the child during certain age ranges helps the reader to better understand *why* kids are behaving the way they are versus only explaining how to correct a behavior.
