Your marriage is more than a sacred covenant with another person. It is a spiritual discipline designed to help you know God better, trust him more fully, and love him more deeply. Scores of books have been written that offer guidance for building the marriage of your dreams. But what if God's primary intent for your marriage isn't to make you happy. . . but holy? And what if your relationship isn't as much about you and your spouse as it is about you and God?

Everything about your marriage–everything–is filled with prophetic potential, with the capacity for discovering and revealing Christ's character. The respect you accord your partner; the forgiveness you humbly seek and graciously extend; the ecstasy, awe, and sheer fun of lovemaking; the history you and your spouse build with one another–in these and other facets of your marriage, Sacred Marriage uncovers the mystery of God's overarching purpose. This book may very well alter profoundly the contours of your marriage. It will most certainly change you.

Because whether it is delightful or difficult, your marriage can become a doorway to a closer walk with God, and to a spiritual integrity that, like salt, seasons the world around you with the savor of Christ.

A must read for married or soon to be married folks

I am engaged to be married this year and I want to enter this union with a holy and biblical perspective. This book has opened my eyes to the purpose and meaning of marriage with the understanding that it is not about us, but completely about God and serving others. Marriage is the mirror of our humanness and requires sacrifice and work in order to minister to your spouse and others. I recommend this book to anyone that wants a biblical perspective on marriage.

BUY IT NOW! It’s an amazing book filled with so much useful, applicable information that any and all marriages will benefit from. It doesn’t focus on a “quick fix” or “step by step solution” it digs deep and helps you see what’s most important in life – GOD! This book speaks volumes to everyone who wants to continually make their marriage better. It’s not about fixing one another, its looking inward and serving Him and your spouse. I highly recommend this book to everyone!

This book is one of my favorite marriage books. It not only has helped me grow closer to my husband but closer to God and it has helped me to even have better relationships. I have purchased it for friends and family and they also have it in Spanish. I recommend it to single and dating people as well. It’s good to read what God’s design is for marriage, what His heart is toward us, what He expects from us and how He helps us love one another as He love us! God bless and I pray it brings you closer to God and your spouse also!

A call to holiness

I have found this one of the most helpful books to give to marrieds and engaged folks. It largely avoids the complementarian/egalitarian debate (though it quotes one complementarian who is quite forceful in his views), focusing more on our heart attitudes. For that reason you can give it to a wide variety of people even if you’re not really sure what their theology of marital roles is or even if they differ from your own. More than that, it presents wonderful challenges that all of us need; I think many marriage how-tos from either side of the evangelical spectrum really don’t focus on the heart behind the decisions one makes in relating to the other and our roles. I think an honest look at the principles in this book would serve to temper folks’ zeal about how they see marriage to work by bringing them to their knees in awe of the holy and awesome calling… in other words, to a place of humility where God can work on us and whatever assumptions or formulas we might bring to the table.

Great book. I like self-help books, but usually get only halfway through them before I’m on to something else. I read this one from cover to cover. Entirely worth my time. Though the book frames marriage in terms of the Bible, it’s appropriate for and relevant to anyone who wants to improve their marriage, including spouses of different faiths and non-Christian couples. It’s not simplistic, opaque or condescending, and it fully and fairly reflects the loving God I’ve experienced. I found it to be a smart, well-written book with solid Biblical support for the author’s assertions. It isn’t a “10 simple steps to making marriage better” guide; rather, it encourages changing one’s thinking about marriage and attitude toward his or her spouse. I wish I’d read it sooner. I think I’m going to buy one for each newlywed couple I know; it’s probably one of the best gifts any couple could get.

A Humbling View of Marriage, Very Christian, Very Self-Reflective

Though I am a Christian, the thought of reading a Christian self-help book never got to it. But this one promises something different, and it delivers. What I read from other reviewers is consistent with my own reading. It does not give too many “techniques to do”, and when it does, it is more like a general principle rather than a gimmick. The author does not put himself in the expert position, and fundamental respects the reader. Most of all, he asks the reader to humble himself (or herself, but I can only speak from the male perspective), to examine the roots of his own resentment, contempt, anger, boredom in marriage, rather than obsess about his spouse’s faults.

A must-read for all marriages

This gives some different perspectives to marriage that ALL should read. Yes, what if God did design marriage to make us holy rather than happy? We did this book/DVD as a group and everyone was so refreshed to read and talk about godly ideas that are often overlooked in marriage counseling. Often the counseling is about communication ideas and such. This is a must-read for all.

Good read whether you are married or ever want to be married

My parents each bought these books and have been reading them together. They really like it and has brought up some good talking points for them. I’ve started to read it as well and even though I’m not married yet (but in a relationship) I’ve really enjoyed the writers perspective and has a lot of great questions to think about and consider. I’m glad I’ve started reading this book before marriage. It’s helped change my perspective about what a christian marriage should look like and how God has created it to be.
