Parenting is a school for spiritual formation―and our children are our teachers. The journey of caring for, rearing, training, and loving our children will profoundly alter us forever. Sacred Parenting is unlike any other parenting book you have ever read. This is not a “how-to” book that teaches you ways to discipline your kids or help them achieve their full potential. Instead of discussing how parents can change their kids, Sacred Parenting turns the tables and demonstrates how God uses our kids to change us. You’ve read all the method books. Now take a step back and receive some much-needed inspiration. You’ll be encouraged by stories that tell how other parents handled the challenges and difficulties of being a parent―and how their children transformed their relationship with God. Sacred Parenting affirms the spiritual value of being a parent, showing you the holy potential of the parent-child relationship.

Good concept but not what I expected

Having read this author’s book on Sacred Marriage I had a preconceived notion of where this book would be heading. I felt that it lacked the same power as his previous work and his attempt to put parenting into the same mold was sometimes forced and stunted. Smart guy but he needs a new recipe.

This has definitely been one of the best books I’ve read this year. It’s inspiring, encouraging, loving, and sincere. This heartfelt book tugs at your heartstrings and can help you see parenting in a different way. I recommend it to all parents.

Sacred Parenting is in the same vein as Sacred Marriage: God wants to change you through parenting (or through your marriage). It is not a how-to book, so you might be disappointed if you thought it to be so, like Dave, one of the other reviewers. While it is not exclusively written to Christians, it will find its best audience in those who know the Lord and are willing to be brutally honest in self-evaluation, and admit that they need to change. And by the way, it will make you a better parent. I found the book so good that I heartily recommend it to others, and have committed to re-read it on a regular basis.

The author is very clear this is not really a how to but a why book. I have been so impressed with the manner in which the author really connects with the same issues I am facing with my children as I am sure many are but yet filled with hope and encouragement to move forward. I wish I had read this book years ago – there is also a 52 week devotional available which is written by the same author called Sacred Parenting as well – it is great as well.

I purchased this book after it was suggested on a blog I read. I am surprised how much I have gotten from this book! It is refreshing to read a “parenting” book that is actually focused on the parents – our struggles, our emotions – and how we become better as a person through parenting. I am almost done with the book, and already plan to re-read it. Every chapter has been thought provoking and inspirational to me. I appreciate the spiritual/religious aspect of it, though I feel others who are non-religious can also take something from it.

This book challenges the notion that parenting is either a parent-centered OR a child-centered enterprise. Thomas suggests that parenting is intended to be a God centered enterprise. He introduces many the emotional and spiritual challenges that parents face and shows, through Biblical text and heart-challenging anecdotes, how a God-centered approach differs from more ego-driven approaches. Fascinating reading that forces you out of yourself and into the presence of God.

Well written and helpful as a parent of a school aged child with ADHD and a very active 2 year old. My big takeaway is becoming more of an active parent rather than a reactive parent so that my children’s behaviors don’t dictate how I respond. Not allowing them to control my emotions.

Most outstanding revelation: God gives parents the children He gives them to mature the parent!—If we all keep that in mind, can make our parenting look totally different.
