Parenting is a school for spiritual formation―and our children are our teachers. The journey of caring for, rearing, training, and loving our children will profoundly alter us forever. Sacred Parenting is unlike any other parenting book you have ever read. This is not a “how-to” book that teaches you ways to discipline your kids or help them achieve their full potential. Instead of discussing how parents can change their kids, Sacred Parenting turns the tables and demonstrates how God uses our kids to change us. You’ve read all the method books. Now take a step back and receive some much-needed inspiration. You’ll be encouraged by stories that tell how other parents handled the challenges and difficulties of being a parent―and how their children transformed their relationship with God. Sacred Parenting affirms the spiritual value of being a parent, showing you the holy potential of the parent-child relationship.

This is NOT a how-to parent book, but a scriptural look at how parenting helps you as a parent grow spiritually. As you, the parent grow scripturally and spiritually in your personal relationship with God your child follows your example. I love the use of historical examples of great men of honor and courage by showing that the fruit we want to see in our children sometimes truly causes a parent more heartache by letting go than coddling them every step of the way. A great read for parents and those who are planning to have children. I’ve already recommended to friends personally and will add it to my mommy-to-be gifts for expecting friends.

Good news for parents

This book is good news for parents! Instead of focusing on changing their behavior (wondering how a child of mine could do that) the author Gary Thomas directs our attention to modeling our love for Jesus, and acting like him as a parent. This is only possible when he resides within you – empowering you to take the high road as a parent. He is faithful to show you what that road looks like every time! I had the privilege of facilitating this as a Morning Grace class which is a women’s Bible study group in Cornelius, NC. The fifty plus participants enjoyed this fresh approach to parenting – and gave huge sighs of relief to know that God can work through our past, present and future failures as a parent!

Insightful, Inspiring, Spiritually Motivational

Full of anecdotes, both personal and biographical, this book graciously stirs the parent’s heart to see their child through God’s eyes without guilt or pressure. It is at once reassuring and inspiring, uplifting while motivating. I listened to it on audiobook but found I needed something to highlight and save. Highly recommended!

Plenty of good information and reminders of the ways God is using our children to sanctify us and conform us into the image of Christ. The parallels between us raising children and God raising us up as His children are endless.

We are doing this six-week series with our Sunday school class, and find it to be among the best parenting courses we’ve ever participated in. Rather than being a guide on how to get your kids to do what you want, it helps parents become better disciples and, in the process, better parents. Thomas is persuasive, non-judgmental, and humble, and participants in the class are being moved and touched each week to grow deeper in their love for Christ and for their families. This course is relatively inexpensive, and we are thinking of buying several for baby gifts, since so many people in our class have said, “We wish we’d had this from the beginning.” One more plus – the six sessions are only about 20 minutes long, which is great in our over-busy society.

Childcare

Having two adult sons not walking with The Lord, through reading SP, I now embrace not a failure, but a continued role. Though they are adults, they are still the children God gave me responsibility for. Reinforced in SP is the need to listen. Listen to God to prompt you about your children’s heart and needs and listen to your children who audibly give you clues.

Great pareting book with Christian values

I was on the lookout for a parenting book that interwove several important Christian values I look to help raise my children with. And Thomas’ book fits the bill perfectly. His personal family anecdotes were not only humorous but very relevant to what virtually all parents go through when raising children. His chapters were easy to digest and put into practice as they truly were backed with Biblical principles. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am trying my best to raise my children as best I could. This book is definitely a great tool to help any parents out there who may need some extra help. I highly recommend it.

The Best Theology of Parenting I Have Read–more than a How to book

 on January 26, 2015
By The Ethics Scholar
The DVD and book provide one of the best approaches to parenting I have ever read or watched. This is NOT a how-to book as much as a heart and head changing view of the amazing theology of parenting that will encourage parents to see their work in a more redemptive light. God is using parent to mature us as adults, but that maturity is not just being more effective but in understanding the encounter God is making to us through parenting.

Children are God’s gift to enjoy.

Many parents want to know how to parent their kids in God’s way but they don’t know that parenting itself is the way experience God’s present in their life.

Having read this author’s book on Sacred Marriage I had a preconceived notion of where this book would be heading. I felt that it lacked the same power as his previous work and his attempt to put parenting into the same mold was sometimes forced and stunted. Smart guy but he needs a new recipe.
