Tasty Indian Style Recipes!

 on May 20, 2014
By Philip Zeal
This books is awesome if your a big time lover of curries and ethnic style foods, like myself. Plus it uses the slow cooker, which makes cooking super easy to make and clean. I also like how the author goes into detail on how to buy a cooker from choosing the size, shape, etc. The recipes are also great looking. I’m looking forward to trying them all out in the next few weeks. I’ll tell you how it goes!

Big omission in one recipe

Right now I am in my kitchen working on the first recipe I am trying from this book–Winter Chickpeas. I am well into it but have run into a puzzle which has me worried, since I am . Planning to make three other recipes from this book as well for a family Christmas Eve dinner. The recipe calls for 1/2 cup dried chickpeas. It says nothing about soaking them overnight, but I did that anyway since I have made bean recipes for years and I know that chickpeas are NOT like lentils and must be soaked first. Now I’m noticing that this recipe calls for no liquid, apart from the small amount in the two small tomatoes and the 1/2 cup of butternut squash. What????? How does the author expect those DRIED chickpeas to cook?? It would be like finding well spiced rocks in your food. I am going goingto add water so this works out, but what an omission! I will proceed with the other 3 recipes today also, and hope I don’t run into anything else nonsensical. Just know that if you wantto make Winter Chickpeas, you should use canned organic chickpeas instead of dried. (Make sure they are organic, or there will be a metallic taste.)

I love Indian food, but sometimes I don’t want to stand in front of the stove stirring and adding ingredients. So, this slow cooker book will give me a few varieties of meals to choose from. I also like the fact that some of the recipes only take three hours. So if I’m busy working and look up at the clock and it’s 3pm, I still have time to put a meal into the cooker in time for a healthy Indian dinner.

As a fan of Indian food, this book gives me a way to balance cooking the food my family enjoys with a busy schedule (gotta love the Crockpot!). This book also expands my repertoire for home Indian cooking with delicious sounding recipes like Lamb Shank Rogan Josh, Baked Potato Kofta Curry, Balti Beef Curry, Rajmah, and Khichdi.
