Saturated fats

Brain Health

The human brain is made up of nearly 60% fat and the majority of the fat in the brain is saturated.

The Myelin Sheath that surrounds the nerves in the brain and ensures their proper function is also largely made of saturated fat and cholesterol.

Think of saturated fat as the “insulation” coating for your nervous system (aka your internal wiring).

When you lack this insulation you become more susceptible to external and internal stress.

Certain saturated fats even function as signaling messengers themselves. A low saturated fat diet can cause poor communication between the cells of your body and result in several catastrophic problems.

For example, saturated fats help nerve signals ensure that just the right amount of insulin is released in response to glucose in the blood

If you consume too little saturated fats, your brain can have a hard time thinking and concentrating.

If you are trusting in a low saturated fat diet, you are missing out on an essential raw material your brain needs to grow, regenerate, and stay healthy

Fat Loss

Fat doesn’t make you fat. While you can technically overeat enough fat calories to accumulate adipose tissue, thus getting fat, this is a difficult feat

Fat is very satiating, especially when paired with low-carb eating. Grass-fed pot roast, ribbed with yellow fat, connective tissue, and ample protein is far more filling than some crusty bread spread with butter.

You’ll eat a decent slice of the former and be done, but you could easily polish off half a loaf of bread with half a stick of butter and still be hungry. It’s difficult to overeat high-fat foods (1,2,3)

It contains high levels of the amino acid asparagine, which serves as a natural diuretic, and increased urination not only releases fluid but helps rid the body of excess salts.

While this may not sound like a good thing at first, it actually makes asparagus a great food to eat for those who suffer from moderate kidney problems or unwanted fluid retention.

If your kidneys do not work properly, the diuretic influence of asparagus will help them to flush out metabolic waste more quickly and easily, and if you are retaining water for any reason then eating asparagus will help your body to remove these excessive fluids

In addition, asparagus gives you 114% of your daily-recommended intake of vitamin K, and this vitamin helps to prevent the calcium build-ups that can lead to strokes and heart disease and anxiety.

Asparagus contains racemofuran, which is a phytochemical that has anti-inflammatory effect on the body

By inhibiting an enzyme called cyclooxygenase (or COX), racemofuran interferes with the chemical reactions that end up causing pain when your body’s inflammatory response is prompted.

Watermelon

Watermelons are mostly water — about 92 percent — but this refreshing fruit is soaked with nutrients

It is a perfect low-carb snack, containing, on average, 6 grams of net carbs in 1/2 cup of watermelon

Keeps you hydrated and relieves muscle soreness

The fruit’s juice is also full of electrolytes and contains l-citrulline, an amino acid that seems to protect against muscle pain.

Additional Benefit – Weight Loss

The high levels of citrulline in watermelon mean that when our body processes this amino acid it can convert it into another amino acid called arginine.

Several studies have found that the more conversion there is from citrulline to
, the more the amino acids block the activity of an enzyme called tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase, TNAP.

Interestingly, blocking the metabolic activities of this enzyme may help to prevent excess accumulation of fat in fat cells.

The reason this occurs is thought to begin with arginine’s function in the body.
